1. The Ranch: A Working Model of an Internet Ministry
I got my first taste of what God could do on the
Internet in 1996 when I put my testimony and a few of my writings on
a web site to encourage others in their faith. The first person to
write to me came from Athens, Greece.
He was needing some prayer and asked if I would pray
with him about his situation. I prayed for him and sent back a
note, and we've continued to correspond to this day. Soon after
his note, others started coming in from around the world: from Egypt,
Malaysia, Hungary and the U.S.
Within a year and over 800 people a month were
visiting my little website from over 70 countries. The list read
like a United Nations roll call. I saw that Christ's
commission to "Go into all the world and preach the good
news to all creation" (Mark 16:15, NIV) was more possible now
than ever before.
We as Christians have an unprecedented opportunity
before us to use the Internet to spread the gospel. Ron Hutchcraft
says it this way: "We have the most powerful delivery
mechanism known to man, and the most powerful message ever
delivered." That's an unbeatable combination.
There's no doubt that God uses new
technology for his purposes. The printing press that Gutenberg
invented in the 1,400's was first used to publish the Bible. Isn't it
interesting that the Bible continues to be the most widely
published book in the world?
Gutenberg was a devout Christian and saw the printing
press as not just a press, but a way to spread the Word of God.
Here's what he said about it:
"Yes, it is a press, certainly, but a press
from which shall soon flow, in inexhaustible streams, the most
abundant and most marvelous liquor that has ever flowed to relieve
the thirst of men! Through it, God will spread His Word. A
spring of pure truth shall flow from it; like a new star it shall
scatter the darkness of ignorance, and cause a light heretofore
unknown to shine amongst men." (from Alphonse De Lamartin's 1854
book "Memories of Celebrated Characters")
God can certainly use this new technology to spread
His Word as well.
I'll take you on a technology tour of my
own website that's grown to include text, audio, video, chat rooms and
more. I'll also highlight other ministries to give you
still more ideas about how to use this tool for God's purposes.
Then I'll conclude with practical steps you can take to start
using the Internet to enhance and expand your own ministry.
If you're ready, let's head on over to The Ranch.
